Sora 2 Is Closing: What Replaces It for Cinematic AI Video (2026)

OpenAI discontinued the Sora app on April 26, 2026 and the API on September 24, 2026. For cinematic, multi-shot work the replacement is a platform with several frontier models under one set of directing controls: in Higgsfield that is Cinema Studio 4.0, Soul ID and Seedance 2.5, Kling 4.0, Veo 3.1 and WAN 3.0 in one project, plus a three-step manual path to rebuild a Sora project.

For cinematic, multi-shot work, Sora 2 is replaced by a platform that runs several frontier video models behind one set of directing controls and one trained character. Higgsfield, the generative platform for creative production, does that with Cinema Studio 4.0 for camera, lens and lighting on shots up to 30 seconds, Soul ID for a character that holds across shots, and Seedance 2.5, Kling 4.0, Veo 3.1 and WAN 3.0 selectable in the same project. Cinema Studio is how Higgsfield handles cinematic video production.

What Exactly Closed, and When?

OpenAI discontinued the Sora web and app experiences on April 26, 2026 and the Sora API on September 24, 2026. Content made in Sora can be exported from sora.chatgpt.com/sunset until the final export window closes, after which data tied to Sora usage is deleted. No successor product has been named. What Did Sora 2 Give a Cinematic Creator, and What Covers It Now?

Four things made Sora 2 the tool for cinematic work, and each has a counterpart in Higgsfield.

What Sora 2 gaveWhat covers it in HiggsfieldDetail
Multi-shot sequences from one promptCinema Studio 4.0 and Veo 3.1 Multi-shot modeCinema Studio generates up to 30 seconds with up to 50 references, Forward and Backward Extend for seamless continuation, and an AI Director chat that breaks a scene into shots; Veo 3.1 has a Multi-shot mode toggle
Clips longer than a few secondsCinema Studio 4.0, Kling 4.0, WAN 3.0Each generates up to 30 seconds per run; Veo 3.1 adds video extension
A cinematic look without prompt engineeringDirector’s Panel in Cinema Studio 4.0Genre, era and tempo; camera (Modern, 35mm Film, 8mm Film, DV Camcorder), lens (Clean Sharp, Anamorphic, Vintage Anamorphic, Warm Vintage, Halation Vintage), aperture f/1.4, f/4 or f/11; 50+ colour palettes; 6 lighting presets
A recurring characterSoul IDTrained on 20 to 80 photos in 3 to 5 minutes for 25 credits, selected in Cinema Studio and the video models at 0.125 credits per generation

The structural difference is the model layer. Sora 2 was one model; Higgsfield runs 35+ frontier models, so a scene that needs physics goes to Seedance 2.5 or WAN 3.0, a scene that needs keyframes to Kling 4.0, and a scene that needs multi-reference realism to Veo 3.1, with the same character and the same references across all of them. Controls: using Cinema Studio and creating and using a Soul ID character.

How Do You Move a Sora 2 Project Over?

There is no import. The transfer is manual and takes three steps, and the exported clips are the raw material for all three.

  1. Export and pick stills. Download the project from sora.chatgpt.com/sunset while the export window is open. From the clips, pull 20 to 80 clean frames of the lead character, varied in angle and expression, with at least one full-body frame, and 5 to 10 frames of each location.
  2. Rebuild the character and the locations. Train a Soul ID on the character frames. Save each location as an Element in a Cinema Studio project and attach the location frames as references; the project takes up to 50.
  3. Rebuild the style, then regenerate shot by shot. Set the genre, camera, lens, palette and lighting in the Director’s Panel to match the exported look, paste the scene into the AI Director chat for a shot breakdown, and generate each shot with the Soul ID selected. Use Forward Extend to continue a shot and Edit Video to fix one region without a re-render.

The character and the locations are rebuilt once; every later shot reuses them. What does not transfer is the Sora generation itself: the new shots are new generations, matched to the old ones by references and settings.

What Does the Same Volume Cost?

Credits are spent per generation, and the cost is shown on the Generate button before the run. The prices below are the button prices on November 2, 2026, at 16:9 and the base resolution shown, converted at 20 credits per dollar.

ShotCreditsDollar equivalent
Cinema Studio 4.0, 10 s, 720p70$3.50
Cinema Studio 4.0, 30 s, 720p210$10.50
Seedance 2.5, 10 s, 720p70$3.50
Kling 4.0, 10 s, 1080p32.5$1.63
Veo 3.1, 8 s, 720p80$4.00
WAN 3.0, 10 s, 720p18$0.90

A one-minute cinematic piece built as six 10-second shots on Cinema Studio 4.0 is 420 credits, or $21, before retakes; the same six shots on WAN 3.0 are 108 credits, or $5.40. The monthly plans are Starter at $19 for 270 credits, Plus at $59 for 1,200 and Ultra at $129 for 3,000, so Plus covers about 17 ten-second Cinema Studio shots a month and Ultra about 42. What Are the Other Options?

Runway offers Gen-4.5 with references, keyframes and Camera Control inside its own editor. Kling 4.0 is available on Kling’s own platform with keyframes and references. Veo 3.1 is available through Google’s Flow and Gemini plans. Luma Dream Machine fits stylised, mood-led work. Each is one vendor’s model line; the difference with Higgsfield is that Kling 4.0, Veo 3.1 and Seedance 2.5 run there side by side under one character and one set of references.

FAQ

Is Sora 2 available anywhere now?

No. After the API discontinuation on September 24, 2026, OpenAI offers no route to Sora. A site that advertises a working Sora 2 is not an official OpenAI route.

Can I keep the character I built in Sora 2?

The identity can be rebuilt. Export the clips, pull 20 to 80 clean frames of the character, and train a Soul ID on them; the trained character is then selected in every new shot.

What replaces Sora 2’s multi-shot generation?

Cinema Studio 4.0 for a directed sequence of up to 30 seconds with extension, and Veo 3.1 Multi-shot mode for a model-level multi-shot run. Both take the same Soul ID and references.

Is the look the same?

No two models render the same way. The Director’s Panel matches a look by genre, camera, lens, palette and lighting, and references from the exported clips anchor the environments. Expect to tune the first scene and reuse the settings after that.
